Toronto has been designated the sixth safest city to live in the world but if you ask Torontonians, not all of them feel that way.
Aside from the violent crimes that go unreported there were a slew of gang related murders, and a record number of pedestrians that died on the road. Then there’s the deaths caused by drunk drivers.
Homicides
There were 76 homicides in Toronto in 2019. Below is the map that tracks Toronto murders:
43 of those murders were shootings; 13 of them were stabbings, and 19 of them included other violent type of incidents.
Toronto mayor John Tory has made several promises over the past 3 years that he’s doing his best to combat gun crimes but so far it doesn’t appear as if anything is working and many Torontonians feel like their safety is being ignored.
Pedestrians Killed on Roads
There were 42 pedestrians killed on Toronto streets in 2019 (Toronto Star). The last person to die was named Wei Jie Zhu-Li.
The Toronto mayor John Tory announced a fancily named campaign “Vision Zero 2.0” which calls for lower speed limits.
Fifteen motorists, six motorcyclists and one cyclist have also been killed on Toronto streets in 2019 (Toronto Star)
Will the speed limits actually be reduced? Some people are impatiently waiting for the change, especially pedestrians and cyclists.
